Malaysia

Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country located partly on a peninsula of the Asian mainland and partly on the northern third of the island of Borneo. It shares borders with Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei, and has maritime boundaries with Vietnam and the Philippines. Malaysia is known for its diverse culture, vibrant cities, and a variety of natural landscapes ranging from expansive rainforests to beautiful coastal regions.

Geography

Malaysia’s geographical landscape is characterized by a coastal plain rising to hills and mountains. The country is separated into two similarly sized regions – Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Malaysian Borneo) – by the South China Sea. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, with several notable national parks and wildlife reserves protecting its natural heritage.

Climate

Malaysia enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by high humidity and temperatures ranging between 77°F (25°C) and 95°F (35°C) throughout the year. The country experiences two monsoon seasons – the Southwest Monsoon (May to September) and the Northeast Monsoon (November to March).

Demographics

As of 2021, Malaysia’s population is diverse and culturally rich, comprising various ethnic groups. The largest ethnic groups are the Malays, Chinese and Indians, with numerous indigenous groups living in both East and West Malaysia.

Politics

Malaysia is a federal constitutional elective monarchy. The system of government is closely modeled on that of the Westminster parliamentary system, a legacy of British colonial rule. The head of state is the King, known as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who is elected from the Malay rulers of nine of the thirteen states for a five-year term.

Economy

Malaysia has a mixed economy, with a strong focus on export-oriented industries. Its key economic sectors include manufacturing, services, and agriculture. As of the early 21st century, it has been recognized as a newly industrialized country.

Culture

Malaysian culture is a melting pot of influences, drawing from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and various indigenous cultures. The country is known for its diverse cuisine, traditional handicrafts, and cultural festivals. Islam is the state religion, but the constitution guarantees freedom of religion, resulting in a multireligious society.
